The Nature and Authority of the Glorious Qur’an

(Research Scholar Hafiz Muhammad Jamil)

Muslims believe that the Glorious Qur’an in its entirety is the words of Allah Almighty. It’s revealed to the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) over a long period of time. Its long period was consisted on nearly 23 years. The Noble Qur’an was well safeguarded against any form of corruption and alteration. Like Allah Almighty states in his Noble Book:

ذٰلِكَ الْكِتٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيْهِ  ھُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ

This is the exalted Book (the Quran), in which there is no place for doubt; a guidance for the pious

By this Aaya, we can say that everything which is completed and has not any place of doubt, to become a guidance for those who want to get guidance. If we see in another way, a thing which already is not completed and full of doubt. How it can help to those people who want to get guidance from it. It we see in the whole world practically, there are million people who got and get the guidance from this Book. It means, it is true and pure book of Allah Almighty.

Once, some take objection on the authenticity of the Glorious Qur’an. Then Allah Almighty said that if anyone have authority and power to come with any else which will be equal to this book. But no body came. Like Allah Almighty said:

وَاِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِىْ رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلٰي عَبْدِنَا فَاْتُوْا بِسُوْرَةٍ مِّنْ مِّثْلِهٖ    ۠   وَادْعُوْا شُهَدَاۗءَكُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِيْنَ

And if you are in any doubt concerning what We have sent down upon Our distinguished bondman (Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him), bring forth a single surah (chapter) equal to it; and call upon all your supporters, other than Allah, if you are truthful.

This matter proves the authenticity of the Noble Qur’an.

There are many proofs that the Noble Qur’an is the revelation of Allah Almighty. Here will be summarized the most important evidences.

Firstly, Prophet Muhammad distinguished clearly and sharply between his own words and the words of Allah Almighty. At no time did he ascribe the Noble Qur’an to himself, although it would have been an honor to be able to claim the authorship of such a unique Book.

Secondly, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) was keen to write down the text of the Noble Qur’an immediately after he received it from Allah Almighty. To ensure the distinction between his own words and the words of Allah Almighty, he (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) warned people no to write down his own prophetic utterances so that they would not be mixed in with Allah Almighty’s words. The Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) even commanded people to erase anything they had written of his own saying that was not part of the Noble Qur’an.

Thirdly, his reception of the Noble Qur’an from God was accompanied by Psychological and physical changes in himself: his face flushed and his body trembled and sweated. This was observed by those present. But in contrast, when he spoke of his own accord, no such things happened.

Fourthly, Allah Almighty’s speech is distinctive and does not resemble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him)’s own words, if we compare the two. Even when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him)’s words reach the zenith of human rhetoric, they do not compare with words of the Glorious Qur’an. The Glorious Qur’an compared with them is like the sun compared with the stars.

Fifthly, the Noble Qur’an is miraculous than the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him)’s own sayings. All people, and even demons, were challenged by Allah Almighty to produce anything equal to the Noble Qur’an but nobody was challenged to equal Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him)’s hadith.

From the early of Islam, Muslims were fully aware of the distinction between God’s words and Muhammad’s words. They introduce God’s words with, God says and Muhammad’s hadiths with the Prophet says.

Sixthly, Muslim distinguish between the words of Allah Almighty and the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) when they read them out. They use a different tone for the word of Allah Almighty.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) described some his companions as “sweet-voiced” when they read the Noble Qur’an. And he himself often asked them to read to him from it. Once he was passing by Abu Musa al-Ashari’s house and heard him reading the Noble Qur’an. He (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) stopped to listen. The Prophet was attracted by his voice. During the morning prayer when they met, the Prophet told him he had listened to his recitation the previous night. The man said: if I had known that you were listening, I could have read even more beautifully for you. The man’s voice was naturally sweet.

Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) asked Ibn Masud to read the Noble Qur’an for him. The latter said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him), “should I read it to you when it was revealed to you? The Prophet replied, “I love to hear it from the lips of others.”

Ibn Masud read the chapter concerning women for the Prophet. When he read the following verse:

فَكَيْفَ اِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ اُمَّةٍۢ بِشَهِيْدٍ وَّجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلٰي هٰٓؤُلَاۗءِ شَهِيْدًا

How then shall it be, when we bring forward from every nation a witness, and bring thee (O Muhammad) to witness against those?

The Prophet asked to stop saying, “that is enough.” Then the reciter looked at the Prophet’s face and saw that his eyes were full of tears.

This clearly demonstrates not only the distinction between the Noble Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet, but also the exactness of Muslims learning of the Glorious Qur’an.
